NotesSpittlemeyer refers to an occupation... a mower (meyer) of the grasses that surrounded religious hospitals (spittle) in early Germany.The Spittlemeyers of Heidleberg landed in Philadelphia in 1733 aboard the ship Hope- Daniel Reid, Master. They sailed to Rotterdam, then to America. The ship's roster is unusual in that it lists women and children, as well as the men. The male S's were:Martin, age 43Hans Adam age 18.The females were:Maria 50 Anna Maria 24Anna Magdalena 21The family was qualified on August 28, 1733.A. Magdalena and her family seem to have settled in modern day Burks County, PA. She married Jacob Brandstetter who had come to this country aboard the Robert and Alice in 1738. Hans Adam signed a petition on behalf of a group of settlers who had moved westward beyond the Blue Mountains a short distance and now were threatened by the Indians. They were petitioning the Governor not to move Fort Franklin back to the East on the other side of the mountain and leave them unprotected. Pa. Archives iii p. 152
